Painting by Howard Hodgkin depicting geometric abstract, solid black outlines on inside edges. pink arc shapes top left & top right. red spots on yellow ground at centre; green dots on red around outside edge.

Marking the 10th anniversary of Howard Hodgkin’s death, this major exhibition offers a fresh look at one of Britain’s most distinctive artists and his unique contribution to British Art.

Hodgkin’s work defies categorisation, often existing on the threshold between opposites, moving between figuration and abstraction, the personal and public, and interior and exterior worlds. Bringing together painting, printmaking and design, the exhibition reveals the breadth of Hodgkin’s extraordinary practice and explores his rich creative relationships with artists, writers and choreographers, including Julian Barnes, Matthew Bourne, Patrick Caulfield, David Hockney, Mark Morris and Susan Sontag, alongside his responses to artists of the past and present.

Structured around six places central to Hodgkin’s life, The Museum, The Studio, The Home, The City, The Garden and The Stage, the exhibition reveals an evolution of his practice shaped by themes of life, death, love, nature and culture. Through a queer lens, it also considers Hodgkin’s celebration of found family, friendship, and diverse forms of desire and pleasure, exploring the ideas, relationships and experiences that informed his work.
