Keynote Speaker - Phoebe Cummings

Phoebe Cummings will be delivering the keynote address on the evening of 27 September exploring her current exhibition at the Gallery, Phoebe Cummings: I hear myself with my throat, and her practice.

Cummings (b.1981) is a distinguished artist renowned for her intricate, ephemeral sculptures and installations crafted from unfired clay. Her work explores themes of fragility, impermanence, and materiality, often engaging directly with the specific qualities of a site. Cummings’ sculptures, which frequently feature organic and floral forms, reflect on the tension between the time-consuming process of creation and the transient nature of the final piece. In addition to her visual practice, she draws inspiration from fiction and poetry, integrating writing into her work. Cummings’ innovative approach has been recognised with numerous residencies and awards, including first place at the inaugural Woman’s Hour Craft Prize in 2017. She is currently a Research Associate at the Ceramics Research Centre UK, University of Westminster.
